Paula is proposing a new model for the treatment of substance use disorders called "The Minnesota Alternative". It is the model currently being used at her program. She provided an overview during a recent presentation on Harm and Risk Reduction at the MARRCH Conference in St. Paul, MN.
To be clear, Paula is not anti-AA, and recognizes that this approach has worked for millions of people, especially people who feel powerless and are open to intervention from a higher source. However, for the millions of others who have a hard time with the principles of AA, or do not have a goal of lifelong abstinence, there need to be alternatives.
Recovery means many things, and sometimes we tend to focus too much on abstinence, instead of quality of life or level of functioning.
If it works, it is the RIGHT way.
